RE: three principal questions about CAI's (did forums search!)
None of the intakes we are buying for our Mustangs are true cold air intakes. They are maybe what's called a short ram intake. True cold air intakes are kind of funny looking and come out off the throttle body, go across the engine compartment and then dive down towards the road putting the air filter way away from the engine. They put the filter in a place that is very subject to water and debris. I don't think any manufacturer of the common intakes for our cars calls them a "cold air intake". The just call them "intakes". This article tested three intakes:

They ran inlet air temperature on the stock box and all the intakes. The stock box ran a 93 degree inlet air temperature and the first aftermarket intake the AEM ran an 89 degree intake temperature. So, our aftermarket intakes do help there.
Aftermarket intakes aren't "power adders", so they don't add power. They allow our engines to suck air a little easier, like us sucking air through a small straw compared to a large straw. So, they free up a little more power, maybe 4-5 horsepower, not really enough to notice without a tune.
On the four stroke motocross bikes I've had we always open up the stock air box by cutting a bigger opening and often rejetting the carburetor. The engine breathes easier. Maybe we could just cut our stock air boxes open on our Stangs and save some money.
