take it into ford and have them due a fuel check... the gas takes have a faulty sensor on them because the gas has to go up and over and then down again and the fumes cause it to tell the sensor the tank is full..

If the test is positive they will replace the tank for you under warenty.

I had mine replaced 3 months into owning the car..and was even given another mustang as a rental while they had mine.

Common with the S197's. Lot's of threads on this. Turn the pump handle to the 2 or 3 o'clock position and slow down the flow rate. Some pumps are more sensitive than others which is why it seems to be a sporadic occurence.

I find if I turn the handle completley upside down it works everytime. Looks foolish but if I dont I can never get more than a 1/2 tank no matter what gas station I go to ...

My problem isn't so much the pump shutting off, but it's spilling gas out. I know the tank isn't full. I looked at the vent tube, but it runs to a sensor or shut off valve and then to the canister. Anyone know how that valve/sensor operates? The vent tube must be closed while the car is running right?

it has happen to me a few times , I have an 06. I just pulled the pump handle out of the tank about an inch and it filled just fine, so you may try that.

this was an issue since day one for this model Mustang and I find it kind of sad how Ford hasn't fixed it yet. They've sold hundreds of thousands of mustangs, and with their thin margins I wonder why it wouldn't be cheaper to redesign the gas tube to correct the venting issue. I guess they know guys like me don't trust the mechanics here to tear out their old gas tanks and install a new one! They would have to get into the back seat to remove it and I can just see the damage they'd do to my rear seats. Not to mention the likelyhood of future issues with the reused fuel pump in the new tank.

So I'l just keep cranking the handle to the 12 o'clock position when I get gas!
Isn't there a thread that asks how many people have or don't have this issue? I'm interested in the percentage of those who have it.
