you find the models at craft stores like michaels, thats where i found mine. Did you guys spray paint your models or did you hand paint them using a brush?

I collect diecast models, mostly in 1/18 scale. I have many Mustangs, including the S197 and they come in a variety of detail levels that usually reflects on the price. The best models are made by AUTOartbut they cost a bit more than the cheaper versions by Mattel, Shelby Collectibles and others. Here's a good list of what's currently available.

Here's a '68 Shelby by Lane Exact Detail:

Also, Franklin Mint makes a very nice S197 coupe in 1/24 scale.

Actually, I think GMP is probably the best. But AutoArt is fantastic and a very close 2nd. Franklin Mint is usually 3rd. Then the rest of them. But you're right. You can usually judge the quality level by the price. Unless, it's rare.

I have a 1:18 scale of mine. My dad even made the door stickers for it like ours has. The only thing wrong with it is the wheels. They are not the right wheels, but oh well. I put it on the dash or behind the back seats sometimes at shows.

Yes, they make excellent models but they don't make the S197, only the Fox bodies in 1/18 and '60's Stangs in 1/24. I have the '93 yellow vert in 1/18 from GMP and it's a great model.

Rat beat me too it! This site is by far the best for the 1:18th scale models. I have bought many from them. I started my collection several years ago and now have over 150. I started with a theme (if not, you'll go crazy buying everything), all red convertibles. I do have some black and white and hardtops, but most are red convertibles. Many makes models etc. I've had so many people ask, where do you buy these, they are so awesome. Very detailed and correct. Anyway, if you're looking to start a collection, the site/link in Rat's post is the place to start. They also have an awesome search feature, so finding a car or something special, should be real easy!
