I can't comment on the RPM's with an Automatic, but I had 4.10's in mine for a while, before changing them for 3.73's. But one thing I can say for sure....there is NO WAY that driving at 75 mph with 4.10's is only 200 to 300 more rpm's than 3.31.

I think it's common to go from 3:31 to 3:73 in an auto.
It is common. I agree.

But there is a reason why most people think 4.10's are too much for an Auto. I'd like to know that reason!

Well, I'll bite. During city driving, I don't want the tranny to shift every 100 feet. I don't want the extra rpm's at highway speeds. Yes, they will increase mpg in the city running stop light to stop light because they get the car rolling easier, but we have 1 stop light in my town. They are good if you run the 1/4 mile often, but I don't do that.

On one of your next trips, document what rpm your showing at 70mph. I got 3.73's and i show about 3000 rpms @ 70mph.

I run at exactly 2000 rpms at 70 mph with my 3.31. No way is 1000 rpm difference between 3.31 and 4.10 only 1 mpg. No FREAKING way!

To keep the peace, Ill double check my rpms and Ill report back.

With a 27" diameter tire 4.10 at 70 mph is 2678 rpm. It would be 2162 rpm with the same tire with 3.31 gears on an automatic.

Same car with 3.73 gears with 27" tire dia at 70 mph is 2436 rpm.At 60 mph around 2088 rpm with 3.73. I have 3.73 in an auto and I like them.

Mine is 27.2 inches in diameter. So the 600 rpms would indeed equate to more than a 1 mpg loss.

For those of you contemplating a swap from 3.31s to 4.10, just lock out the overdrive on the freeway to get an idea of what the revs will be like.
