Default 1 year old stang, difficult to move stick shift into 1st and 2nd

I brought my car to the dealer today for a couple of things, one of them is that I get resistance from the stick shift when I shift into 1st and 2nd. The dealer didn't notice the problem, so they didn't fix anything

I tinkered a little when I picked it up, and actually once I move it into 1st, 2nd, and then back and forth, it's smooth. But on the first shift in, it stops for a second and I have to force it. Then coming out of 1st into 2nd, it stops in the neutral area and I have to force it. If I shift fast and hard I won't notice it, but I shift gently so I notice it every time.

It used to glide right in all the time, so it can't be my imagination.

anyone else have this problem?

I can't say I have had the problem.....but the solution is to order an MGW and you'll be a happy camper

+1. Or a Hurst if you want something cheaper.

In any cases, most of us didn't wait for the original unit to go bad to replace it.

The stall between 1 and 2 is pretty common, getting some motor mounts and/or che torq limiters with brace pretty much will get rid of it

Mike, like you I have difficulty shifting sometimes, but it doesn't sound as bad as yours. I occasionally get a bit of a grind type feel...it's weird. My solution is going to be like everyone else seems to do and just get an aftermarket shifter.

One thing you might try is to go under the car and loosen all the shifter bolts, completely removing the rear two nuts that thread onto the welded-on studs. On these two studs install one small washer apiece and reinstall the nuts and tighten all connections.

This was part of the instructions for my Steeda Tri-ax in case the shifter didn't want to go into gear well. It puts a slightly different angle on the shift linkage.

WARNING::: Those welded-on studs are very weak and cannot take much torque. Just tighten them until snug.

Sounds like a lot of work, but it might solve the problem.

EDIT::: Actually the part where the washers go is different for the Steeda shifter. Washers will not work on the stock shifter. You will need a flat thin piece of metal that goes from one stud to the other with holes drilled in it at the proper place to put it between the shifter's square bushing and the car's underbody.

thanks for the info everyone. I wasn't too interested in a short throw honestly, but if this keeps getting worse I'll have no choice. I honestly like the stock shift **** better too. oh well
