Other cars I've had have had the antenna in one of the windows.
Even my -88 BMW, 7-series though, but anyway...

I believe there's an optimal length to an FM radio antenna -- like the FM wave height is 23.5 inches or something, so anything shorter than that will reduce the signal reception. I'd do a search and read up on this though. I don't know if there is any practical sense to this.
The shorty antenna's have the same length wire, thats why they are wider, which alows them to be shorter.

Actually thats backwards... It is the length that counts not the girth...

power antennas are a hastle, my bud has one on his lexus, its tneds to stick, not go down all the way, and its more of a pain then anything, ied say but a antenna thats intergrated into the rear window or the windshield

It's 31-32 inches. AM is longer than that even.
