Don't have a scanner, but they usually check your plates over their computers. It is only really good to have if you are planning on racing or something. Other than that, they are purely fun to have because you can find out all sorts of things about accidents and once my friend told me he avoided a few DUI checkpoints...

EXTREMELY ILLEGAL TO HAVE!! in some states! Here in Chicago, if we catch anyone w/ a scanner their are DEFINETELY going to jail, having their car impounded etc etc. The only people who we catch carrying these around are gangbanging drug dealers.I would HIGHLY suggest not carrying one around unless you know the law in the state you live. And don't expect any breaks from the cop who stops and and finds you carrying one. IT WONT HAPPEN.....(yes I am a cop in chicago)

Nothing illegal about it here! Always wanted one just never wanted one enough to get it....and now my life is too busy to bother listening.

I have had a scanner since the good ol Bearcat BC250 programmable days
to the modern TrunkTrackers I now have. From the good ol days of VHF-Lo
and VHF-Hi simplex transmissions to the900Mhz MDTs and trunked multi
frequency computer data controlled radios of today. I have one at the house
hooked up to a VOX recorder and yes I have reviewed the tape after
being pulled over. They had computers or MDTs in the cars around here
and radio traffic went to almost nothing. They have since nixed the
problematic system and went back to the trunked radios.

The AUX input for the stereo works good with the headphone out
jack of my scanner. Just be sure and turn it down/off when they pull
you over.

You can hear everything transmission that the police, fire, ems, planes, whatever make.

Perfectly legal in Jersey...Airwaves are public domain. Not for transmitting, but no one cares about listening.

Since when are these illegal in Chicago? I mean you can go to a radio shack and buy one. I had though that since the Fire, Police, etc are public services it's the public right to be able to listen, could be wrong though.

I use one, its a mobile. I have 5 surrounding towns police programmed in, local FBI, air tactical and state police. And yes, people can hear you tags called in and what the outcome is on the finding.

They're not. Anyone can have one for in home personal use. You just can't hack in and/or benifit fro listening in on cordless or cell phone calls. Some state require permit like for a CB radio.
