My 05 GT was experiencing the popping noise also. It was so bad that It was driving me nuts. My dealership (Tidwell World Ford) in Kennesaw Ga. fixed it the first time as it appears after about 500 miles that it's completely fixed. I have not experienced even the first pop since then and the front end actually feels tighter. The work order says that the strut plates and bearings were replaced.
