Default Passenger Airbag / Recall?

Not sure if this is specific for the recall, or if it's normal...just wondering.

I was on my way home from work today and when I started my car, the light on the center console saying the passenger airbag was off lit up. I had a bag with my laptop on the passenger seat. So what I'm wondering....is the car smart enough to sense weight in the seat but realize it's not heavy (i.e. like a child or carseat or something) and automatically disengage the passenger airbag for safety? Or is this something tied into the recall?

Either way, I need to take it in and get the recall taken care of, but want to double check this before I take it in.

That's what I was thinking. Just wanted to be sure in case I needed to tell the dealer that when I take it in for the recall. Thanks!
