it never ceases to amaze me how many times people respond to a thread without even reading it. whether or not you agree with the op's analysis, at least read what he wrote before posting...

.. anyway, it would be difficult to convince me that gas is a concern for most people on this forum. if gas were a concern we might all be on the Toyota Prius forum. We are all willing to pay more for gas because we find higher utility in the "fun factor" our cars provide...
I'd be lying if I said that no thoughts crossed my mind regarding the rising gas prices during the period of time between putting down a deposit and driving the '08 home. Or that even the CAK/tune that's on order will probably cost a little more in terms of fuel in the long run. So far, it's all still below the point at which I'll just say no.

The thing that the op is missing is that most people do notdo JUST gears to the car.
Combined city and highway, the car got 17mpg from the factory.
I have 4.10's, tune and CAI, Steeda UDP's, Summit COP's, and alot of other crap I'm forgetting.
My car now gets 17.5 mpg. Honestly, I would not care if it was 7.5mpg...I did not buy a V8 mustang thinking about gas mileage.

I love my FRPP 4.10's - but if you do a lot of highway driving (ie over 60-65 mph) then you will get worse gas mileage compared to the stock 3.55's - no doubt about it. How much less is hard to say - depends on how much & how often you put your foot into it. But overall it was a wash for me - better response & performance across the band was worth the 200-300 higher rpm & lower mpg vs. the 3.55's.
My 2 cents

16-12? I don't know how many people you surveyed, but I don't think i'll be going to you for any financial advise. 4.10 gears aren't going to hurt your city mileage like they will your highway mileage. I got 19.6 mpg my last tank of gas and I have a supercharger as well. While I wasn't using light speed, i wasn't accelerating like a grandma either.
If you are going to add a supercharger or go to the track often, I would recommend changing out the differential when changing gears. I wish I had done both at the same time.
At 70mph I'm turning 2400 rpms, that is what hurts your gas mileage.

i had 4.10s and went back to 3.55s since with the turbo in 4.10s it would peg the redline while spinning and with the 3.55s it doesnt that much..i have nitto extremes 555 drags, but the torqe will set you in the seat..

Get a 2 speed rear end out of a dump truck.
Problem solved.
Low gear for bunouts and take-offs.
High gear for fuel economy.
If you are that worried about the added fuel
costs, you should be driving a Yugo.
Enjoy it while you can as fossel fuels are
all drying up.

RE: Not sure 4.10 gears are worth it....
The main factor for myself and probably alot of other members of this forum is the fact that it is/was way easier to convince my wife to let me spend $300 for my gears and install than it would be $3000 for s/c. As much as I would LOVE to be s/c'ed, I know that that is something this family man will never see. 4:10's really make this car move and I'm glad I have them. And I really don't know what type of MPG's I'm getting, don't really care. Just having fun.

The only way your mpg will drop is if you let it drop. You can have every mod out there and get better mpg.(If you drive like a grandma). The problem is once you get the mods its hard not to be WOT.Like the other post said ,The only way its out of your hands is if tou have to drive on the highway everyday.I never have to so im fine....

Couldn't agree more that gears make your car a lot faster, but a supercharger wakes the car up even more than gears, and the actual cost of owning a supercharger isn't that much more than getting 4.10s...especially when you consider what a supercharger adds in re-sale value.

The TCO of a S/C is going to be more over 5 years then gears.
You have the upfront cost of a S/C which is way more then gears and then you have the upkeep of the S/C over 5 years.
You will loose MPG with a S/C as well as with gears
So now you have to shell out $6,500 for aS/C upfront, how are you going to do that?
1. Take it out of savings, which case you now lose the interest you were earning on that money in the bank.
2. Finance it,which you are now paying interest on the money you borrowed.
Upkeep of a S/C will be more over 5 years then on gears and possibly much more if you have a catastrophic failure.
Gas mileage will decrease withboth units, but, I havenot seen anyone reporting a 4MPG lose on either setup.
The re-sale value on the S/C will offset the cost some, but you are going to lose a lot on it, so then maybe you break even.
Your logic seems flawed.
