Default okay, wtf..rust INSIDE car under dash (pics)

So I'm peeking around under the dash near the smart junction box since I just discovered that I have the well known water leak, and I notice this:

http://home.nc.rr.com/mackowsky/phot...stang_0087.JPG
http://home.nc.rr.com/mackowsky/phot...stang_0090.JPG

The first two pics are from under the passenger side dash, but nowhere near the kick panel or the SJB - they're near the center of the dash, near the radio and climate controls. The other two pics are from under the DRIVERS side dash!

Up until 2 weeks ago, I had never see water anywhere inside the car. Then after a rain storm, my passenger side floor was a bit wet, and there was a good amount of splattered water behind the kick panel. 25K miles. I have NEVER seen water dripping anywhere or any moisture whatsoever on the drivers side. The amount of rust I'm seeing seems so excessive that I should have seen water at some point.

Can someone please peek under their dsah and see if their metal looks like this?

It's call condensation, if your interior gets damp the bare metal will rust due to the water that is evaporated and recondensing on the unprotected metal. Mine has the same surface rust as yours.

S197 Mustangs seem to leak, if you arestill under warranty you should have a ford service center check it out.

If they won't address it you should think about looking for an anti-rust paint that you can use on it.

Check under your hood you will see a lot of rust. My car was built in January and I bought it in Febuary and its been garaged most of the time. I see rust under the car and on componants that support the engine.

Most likely I will end up getting an anti-rust coating from a car wash place.

When I did my CAI install I put some WD40 on the parts of the heat shield mounting cage that touched my car under the hood, this will help prevent rust before it starts.

I was thinking it was probably that since it's so uniform and diffuse, but with the discovery of the water leak I'm freaking paranoid now. Anyone else convince me it's normal? Can someone else loom at theirs and tell me if it looks similar?

I just checked, I have minor rust, not as bad as your pics under the dash as well. Is this normal? Well let me put it this way, I have had my car for just over 1 monthand have 1300 miles or less. No, its not normal. However I'm simply going to use some anti-rust paint that will cost me under 20 bucks and protect the rustable pieces.

That's the way it is nowadays...
No priming or painting on those dash braces and support.
The car doesn't need to leak in order for those to rust out.
Especially being so close to the A/C vents.

Do you need to sand off the existing rust before painting it? Also, these parts are way up under the dash - how are you going to get up there?

So it's just surface rust right? Not like it's going to corrode through, correct?

Ford saving some money, take a look under your car, the entire rearend is bare metal, or in most cases rust. I spent 3 hours today sanding the rust off of mine and putting a coat of black paint on it.
