Hmm...

I just looked up the gas guzzler tax brackets and the Mustang GTshould have a gas guzzler tax reguardless of the rearend. Maybe something has changed since I bought mine but I remember NOT paying a gas guzzler tax on mine.

at least 22.5 No tax
at least 21.5, but less than 22.5 $1000
at least 20.5, but less than 21.5 $1300
at least 19.5, but less than 20.5 $1700
at least 18.5, but less than 19.5 $2100
at least 17.5, but less than 18.5 $2600
at least 16.5, but less than 17.5 $3000
at least 15.5, but less than 16.5 $3700
at least 14.5, but less than 15.5 $4500
at least 13.5, but less than 14.5 $5400
at least 12.5, but less than 13.5 $6400
less than 12.5 $7700

07 GT/CS 3.55:1 option and didnt have to pay it. based on the above scale it would depend if that is for City/ Highway/ or overall. If Highway only mine listed as 26 MPG avg, cant remember what the overall listed as. I didnt really care just didnt want to pay the tax

From what I've heard it's b/c the shelby GT has the Ford Racing CAI and, in turn, tune on it. By requiring Premium Gas with the tune, and the tune continuing Ford's trend of running rich, the Shelby GTs fall into the gas guzzler tax range.

I stand corrected. I just looked at my sticker and I did not pay it on the 07. I did pay it on the 2002 gt though. I assumed I payed it on the new one.

I didn't pay on mine with the 3.55 gears from the factory and I think maybe it has to do with the fact that everything will be changing to have better fuel efficiency in the comming years and maybe Ford is starting now!?[&:] New laws and all will greatly effect how everything in the powertrain is made for the future! lots of hocus pocus responses being delivered here!

The Bullitt has 3.73 gears vs 3.55 for the Shelby GT.

The gas guzzler tax has got nothing whatsoever to do with the price of the car.

The Shelby GT is listed under Shelby, not FORD. They were unable to get the Shelby GT 22.5 MPG (they got 22.4! so close) so they fall into the $1000 gas guzzler tax.
http://www.epa.gov/fueleconomy/guzzler/420b07018.pdf

BTW- why is it that any one of us would love any one of those cars? I think they need to give trucks and SUVs the same taxes.

The Bullitt was able to fall under the Mustang GT's ratings. Remember the Bullitt isn't as powerful as the Shelby GT, but only a little!
