5w20 or 10w30?

RE: 5w20 or 10w30?
Why run 30W in our cars? Doesn't the 20* in temp difference go away with the cooling fan? Isn't that why we have stats so the operating temp stays the same? I may run 0W20 next winter for better warm up mpg's but I'd never go 30W.

As if being in the south is really that much hotter than the north... In PA we get up to 100 for a few days every summer. And here in KY we had 6 days in a rowabove 103 last summer.Your engines don't get much hotter, if at all, in the south compared to the north. I just think "y'all" in the south just have a need to feel "special". LOL!

your engine is much hotter than the outside temp anyway
so unless your seeing 150F+ outside its not going to do anything to you
now if you were seeing -40F or lower then worry about 0W-20 instead
and if your seeing 150F+ then get 5W-30
it doesn't get near that in the continental US so don't worry

I work with a bunch of Ford guys(Guys who work for a company in Michigan that do alot testing and prototype work for Ford)and asked the same question to them, was told that it isdue to the tighter tollerances of the main bearings the ford recomend the 5w20. Thicker oils due not get into the bearings well enough to keep the lubed. One tech said he has seen quite a few with wiped bearings and they all used heavier than recomended oils!!

Good topic.
In Finland it seems to be impossible to find 5w-20 oil, we just don't have enough cars using that to create market for it.
So, seems that I need to use 5w-30 that is available from Mobil and Castrol.
