the negatives of gears

RE: the negatives of gears
A few other negatives of 4.10s which I don't think anyone has mentioned:
- If, in the future, you plan to use forced induction, you will likely find 1st to be useless - just spin (there are those who do have 4.10s and FI and like it though)
- If you ever planned to AutoX, 4.10s will bump you in class to where you won't be competitive
- If you ever plan to drive on a highspeed track (a road course) you may not have enough top speed in 4th and too little torque in 5th - depends on track

Some people might feel that 4.10:1 is too low for a daily driver, but for me it's perfect and the way I wish the car would have come from the factory. The drawbacks are very minor and not really even worth mentioning when compared to the benefits.
However, if you routinely cruise on the freeway at 75+ MPH you might want to consider sticking with the 3.55:1 gears, or maybe go with 3.73:1. Though I personally don't feel it'd be worth the money to go from 3.55 to 3.73.
I have 4.10s on both of my cars and wouldn't trade them for the world. Don't fear the gear, man.

4.10's are no detriment on a daily driver. The pure and simple fact is that they make the car more fun to drive - as Fourth Horseman said: Don't Fear The Gear!!!! I don't race my car - it's purely street driven. With the AC on, cruise set at 80MPH, I can knock down 22MPG on the highway. Dropping the thing down to 4th and nailing it is evil fun My only regret is that I didn't go with 4.30's! That way my overall ratio would be 4.10 instead of 3.90 due to the 295/45/18 tires I have in the back [8D]

4:10s' give your car edge over the normal 3:55s'. You will take off faster , you will accelerate faster at any speed. You will be happy.

Are those negatives?

RE: the negatives of gears
My car came with 3.55's, I felt that 5th gear on the Hwy was a little flat. I put 4.10's in and they were awesome. However, I spend A LOT of time on the Interstate.......and cruising at 80+ for a couple of hours with the 4.10's just wasn't for me, two reasons A) 3200 rpm's ( ) and B) 3200 rpm's ( )
Enter 3.73 Gears, the car performs great around town, and on the Interstate, it's all good. I'm very happy with them.

RE: the negatives of gears
I dont do much highway driving and my mpg actually went up a few from 16 ish to a regular 19.8 mpg So it all depends on where you drive it and how I supposes but Im happy as a pig in **** to see my mpg go up. Takes less to get the car moving to the speed limit basically is what i find. with my 3:55 seemed I had to get on it more to get there with the 4:10 im in 5th before I know it and my rpms are low as a ****...........oh ya and when you want to get on it say bye bye to the guys with 3:55 and same mods
So much more fun roasting your tires in 2nd rather then just chirping them. ya I could spin them good in 2nd before with stock gears but had to have my rpms way high now I can just down shift to 2nd and chomp on it while im already cruising and kick my *** out nicely.....stockers just dont do that.

RE: the negatives of gears
Only drawback to 4.10s I can think of is your face hurting from all the smiling. As far as top speed, its not like your pegging 5th at 130 or anything. I just pull harder through 130 on to my same as stock 145ish top speed. For Stateside HWY driving 4.10s are fine. As for mileage on the hwy, on average, I got 350-360 miles per tank of gas when I lived in NM doing 90% hwy driving. I didn't go all mythbusters on it but I did track my miles on the trip O/D and it matched up.
