Default 3.73 at the track quick question!

I have the stock 3.31s and i kind of like them. The main reason im afraid to get shorter gears, is i like the fact that i dont have to shift into 4th at the track. Those of you with 3.73s.. do you stay in 3rd, or shift into 4th? Thanks!

No, i want to upgrade from 3.31's, and if i do.. it will be 3.73s, maybe 4.10s if gas prices get better. My question is simply for those who have the 3.73s and if they shift into 4th or not at the 1/4 mile track.

Thanks joolander. Im hoping for 13 flat next time i go out there.

Why does it matter? If you have to shift into fourth before the finish, that means you have accelerated faster -- hence the higher ratio gears!

If you like the 3.31's, you'll love the 3.73's. As far as shifting into 4th through the traps, that would depend on how high your rev limiter is set.

It does matter because with shorter gears you have go to into 4th at a lower speed. So if he is at 105 in 3rd at 5500 rpm with 3.31's he will be at 93mph or so with 3.73s at the same engine speed.
To answer the OP's though-- what rpm are you at with your current gears when you're at the finish line? if you're at 5500 and you plan on shifting at 6000rpm then you'll need to do so at 101mph.

I'll let you know in a couple weeks. I have 3.73's and I've been running some practice runs on an isolated straight stretch of road near me, I'm thinking I'll need to be in 4th by the end of the traps.

However; I had 3.31 stock and it was nice for highway and all that jazz. You can and will be able to tell the difference with the 3.73 right away. Really wakes the car up, gets it into the magic powerband quicker as well.

And when those little wrx's want to play when your on the highway, I can pull pretty well in 5th. Overall I'm happy so far, but like I said I'll let you know when I get a chance to get to TnT in a couple weeks
