Yeah, but 5.0 and 5.7 sound so cool. Are you going to put 4.9 and 5.5L on the car?? Pontiac did. I was in love with the 4.9 turbo trans-am as a young boy!

At a red light a guy driving a taxi was hollering at me. I looked over and he said, "what kind of motor you got in that thing?" I said a 4.6 v8. He said, "thats it? will it run?" I said not really...only mid 11's. He said, "no way." I smiled and said its turbochargered. He was like...."very nice". Dude was at least 60. He was knocking my lil V8 initially.

Folks need a subscription to modified mustangs. lol!! I always tell them "a little 281" and smile. They just don't understand...

Eventually Ford will have to up the displacement. Have you guys seen the new H302 mustang from Saleen? Aluminator block poked to 302ci. Supposed to be able to take on the new Z51 vette. Puts down ~620hp/tq (maybe more in production trim) comparable to the Z51.

It's kind of like when people mod their cars but don't understand what changes they are making.. A good example.. when people change gears and say "I got 3:73s" or "I got 4:10s"... When it's clear that they don't know what a ratio is.. or how it is changing the way the car drives.

The funny thing is... If these old guys really knew anything about cars, then they would be able to quickly calculate that your response of 4.6L = 281 cubic inches. If they're still asking what size after you say 4.6L, then dont bother because they clearly know nothingabout cars.

Yeah, some old guy asked me to "pop the bonnet". I had no idea at first that he meant he wanted me to open the hood. I'll tell ya', I'm glad I'm only 52...

The last car show I went to last year had a couple of these old guys walking around that didnt know **** about cars but talked like they did.

old guy: what engine this thing got.

me: (well they only have 3 choices and this aint a GT500!!) A 4.6 v8.

old guy: so how big is that.

me: 281 cubic inches.

old guy: oh you mean 289.

me: no its a 281.

old guy: well if its not a 302 its gotta be a 289.

me: (this isnt 1967!!!!!!!!@#@#$) no, Im sure its a 281 4.6 V8.

old guy: I think you got your facts mixed up young man.

me: ([:@][:'(][>:]) I guess so...........WTF and thats happened to me more than once!
HA! I've had similar conversations with folks who approach me about my car.. "281? You mean 289, right?"

Anyway, my own quick way of estimating metric to cubic inches, there's roughly 60 cubic inches per liter, with practice you can go back and forth without a calculator:

5.0 X 60 = 300, pretty close to 302

350 Chevy (blasphemy!) - round up to 360 - 360/60 = roughly 6 liters, so you know 350 is a tad less (5.7 in reality)

I think most "older guys" and I'm one of them at 50 just have not kept up with all the new improvements in cars in general. Back in the day cubic inches = horsepower. My uncle had a '66 289 V8 and my '07 4.0 or 245 has more horse power and better MPG. I'm still learning every day, heck I used to tune my old cars by ear because I didn't have a timing light. Cars from every era have neat things about them, real car guys know that.

it's cuz ci displacement sounds so much better....take my plymouth for example...what sounds better - "it's a 440" or "it's a 7.2 litre"? back in the day you're figuring a really good motor tuned, headers, port and polish, etc.could put up 1 HP or so per cubic inch...stock, close but no way, but who leaves their performance cars stock now (other than 80 year olds with vettes)?
