Old Guys Always Ask What Size Engine?

When ever older guys ask me what size engine I have , I always tell them 4.6 Liter - V8. But that seems to not answer there question, becuase they continue to ask what size. Im always stuck with having to tell them, I dont know. Then they start guessing by the liters that I told them. One guy yesterday said it might be a 302.....? What size is the engine? And what does that 3** number represent?

[hr]

I use to think that the 3** number was the Cubic Centimeters, but it cant be, becuase you have motorbikes with 1000cc and I know those engines are smaller than my V8......Help me....lol....I'm tired of the shame

Cubic inches is what they are looking for. The old 5.0liter engine was also known (by the older of school) as a 302 cubic inch.
The 5.7 was a 350 (cubic inches)

A 4.6 liter equates to 4600 cubic centimeters (cc). That's why your 1000cc motorcycles are also referred to a "liter" bikes, or 1.0 liters

In cubic inches, 4600cc is roughly 280.71 cubic inches

Thanks to Google for that conversion.

Yep, its a 281

As for the 3 ? What do you mean? 3V for 3 valve??

Yeah 4.6 L,damn metric system! I remember as a kid trying to learn the metric system in grammar school in the late 70's because we were "getting on board with the rest of the world". "By the 1980's everything in this country (USA) will be metric", the teachers ( and nuns) said. "No more inches, feet, miles, ounces, gallons, pounds, etc, etc". Yeah, that really worked, I guess we stopped at engine sizes and soda bottles! LOL

BTW What constitues an "older guy"? I just turned 40, but I know the whole liter thing, I think car mfg's stopped referring to cubic inches in car engine sizes in this country when I was a kid, late 70-s early 80's?

No problem, if ya wanna get technical, the Chevy LS1 and LS6 (Gen 3) are not true 5.7 liter engines, they are 346 cubic inches, a 5.7 is a 350!!! LOL

Its 300 at the flywheel and around 260 at the wheels.

RE: Old Guys Always Ask What Size Engine?

All car manufacturers use "flywheel" numbers. There is always "parasitic" loss when that HP is used to turn the drivetrain.. hence lower hp ratings "at the wheels".

You can get a CAI and tune to pretty much make up for that loss.
