RE: 3.31 gears suck?
3.31's are fine for highway driving, gas mileage and noise levels.
Anything lower and you're compromising all the above in exchange for a snappier 0-Vmax.
Depends on what you want from your ride. if you're a regular weekend warrior at the local strip then go for some gears, they aren't that expensive.
If you don't run the drag strip much/at all, then leave well alone.

I switched em out with 3.73's a few years ago. It made quite a bit of difference. The downside is highway mpg. Cruising at 70mph, Im turning 2450 rpms and get 23 mpg down hill.

I worked with a guy who had never driven Mustangs before with a Showroom Stock 2008 GT with the M5/3.31 combo.
After a little coaching and critique between some runs he cut a 1.95 13.55 @ 103at about 700' Density Altitude.
I would say they are about 1/10 second off the pace. They are trickier to launch. The line between bog and spin is razor thin.
PS Dont let Red scare you when it comes to changing gears. 3.73's with a Manual (0.675 OD) turn about the same rpm as 3.55 with an Auto (0.71 OD). Many here get pretty good mileage with 4.10's in Manuals.
