RE: pics of 275/40/18's on 8.5" rim
I am now leaning towards the
275/45VR18s for my 8.5x18 rims
after reading some of the posts here.
And now leaning back towards 255/45VR18s
since reading the post below. []

RE: pics of 275/40/18's on 8.5" rim
I wouldn't recommend putting 275/40/18's on an 8.5" wheel, nor would I trust anyone who would recommend it. Recommended wheel widths are specified for a reason.
http://www.carbibles.com/tyre_bible.html
Check out page 2 and see "An ideal rim-width calculator", see also what he mentions about using a wheel narrower or wider than recommended.
Here’s something I found at Yokohama’s web site that helped me to understand the relation of tire size to wheel width:
Choosing a wheel near the middle of the range will give a balance between ride quality and handling. A wider wheel will improve handling at the expense of ride quality, while a narrower wheel will improve ride quality at the expense of handling. Consider these compromises when selecting wheels.

Im a little interested in the red dot myself. Whats the purpose of it?
Im a little interested in the red dot myself. Whats the purpose of it?
This red dotneeds to be placed next to the lightest spot on the rim which is next
to the valve stem as there is rim material missing for the hole.
This pre-balances the tire/rim assembly so minimum amounts of weight will be required
to get the assembly to balance.
New Ford tire/rim assemblies have a yellow spray paint spot on the inside air holding
part of the rim that corrolates to a flourescent yellow sticker on the outside rim lip.
This is the lightest spot on the rim WITH the TPMS sensor assembly installed 180 degrees
out from the valve stem hole. Tires have a red dot indicating the heaviest part of the tire.
The red dot and yellow rim sticker are then aligned up during wheel/tire assembly for
minimum amounts of weight required to balance the assembly. Once you remove the
TPMS assembly, the yellow sticker becomes unvalid and the dot should be placed at
the valve stem.
