Default RE: Dyno tune vs. custom tune...

i live 2 hours from brenspeed. i asked brent if i should get a dyno tune (my car is stock powertrain wise) and he said he would do it if i wanted to but he said it would not be worth it, so i didn't.

someone on here posted that they went ahead and did the dyno tune with brenspeed and it gave him a whopping increase of 1hp.

A Brenspeed, Bamachips, or VMP type tune is a tune that you recieve via e-mail or if you buy a tuner from them, they are pre-loaded on the tuner. They don't use your car specifically, but rather a baseline tune from their Mustangs and others that have provided them with datalog files. Some of them allow you to datalog after you put the tune on and send them the file, allowing them to make adjustments. Your car never sits on a dyno.

A custom dyno-tune is just that, your car is on a dyno and somebody is tuning it custom to your car only.

I can't remember who but somebody said that they had a Brenspeed/Bama/VMP tune and switched to a dyno tune with only a 2-3 hp increase. The "online" tuners are very, very good.
Agreed. Sometimes a dyno tune could make the worlds difference in driveability though and making the power curve much better. We're talking about a peak hp increase of 2-3 rwhp but it could be more within the power curve. My recommendation is VMPTuning.com. Justin is an awesome guy, writes awesome tunes, great turn around time, great customer support.

My personal experience: I ordered a SCT tuner when I installed Roush CAI. I then took it to PSI motorsports (who I ordered the SCT tuner from) and he put it on the dyno and checked the numbers and found that the car was running "lean" on the SCT 93 octane tune. After the "custom" retune everything smoothed out...basically results with the mail order tunes are going to vary from car-to-car and between different CAIs.

I'm assuming you're using a Xcal3? In that case the stock programs are designed to work with a stock intake, not aftermarket so of course it was going to be off.

Then why did they ask, before doing the tune, whichCAI I had, what the gear-ratios were, any other mods, etc.? Don't they use different tunes based on those parameters?

Hmm. So you dealt with a tuner? Which SCT product do you own? I was under the impression that you bought a Xcal3, which comes preloaded with tunes, not custom tunes though. So if you had to do all of that than you've ordered from a tuner who loaded custom tunes. Who did you go with?

I've done mail-order tunes from Brenspeed since I put the CAI on @ 500m. Have done a few rewrites to the tune with the progressive bolt-ons. 26,900 on it now.
In Feb I went there & had Brent do a dyno tune on mine, as I installed a set of LT's he doesn't sell. I mainly wanted to be sure I wasn't going to do any long-term damage as I plan on keeping the Mustang a while.
His emailed tune ended up being spot-on. He tweaked another 2hp/2tq from what he had sent me. No gain for the dollar so to speak, but knowing the A/F, timing, etc. was good was well worth the cost to me.
I do believe the well-known tuners will provide you with a better tune than what you'll get pre-loaded onto the SCT2,3 or Diablo.
