Default Thinking of doing a 5.4 swap

Now, I've a few questions:

1. What else would I be needing besides the engine/supercharger and transmission?
2. Where are all these guys that are doing these swaps getting the parts said above from?
3. Will my current longtubes work on the 5.4 block?

Thanks!

I'm no expert but I am fairly certain that you will need the entire engine, transmission, including the fuel pumps, and a new PCM. Most people get their parts from a wrecked GT500 but since those are uncommon, you can buy that straight from Ford or somewhere else. Your best bet would be to spend some time looking for a wrecked GT500 as that will make things considerably easier and cheaper. I am also fairly certain that your current longtubes will not work on the 5.4. Good luck.

Thanks! I guess this weekend will be comprised of looking through some junkyards. :x

I'm going to boost my engine, then I got to thinking about just swapping for a 5.4.
If it's too expensive, I'll just stick with my original plan.

Also, will my MGW work with the 6-speed?

Hmm, not sure about the MGW, but I don't think it will work.

You may just want to spend your time building up the block and going with FI. It would be cheaper, you could keep all your aftermarket stuff, and you can make upwards of 700 RWHP!

If you are seriously considering swapping to the 5.4 I would give PLStang a PM as he just got done doing this and there was a thread about it. Here's the thread.

The engine, trans, and Supercharger are only the beginning! Coolant lines, wiring harness, either reprograming your PCM to run the GT500 or reprograming the PATS on the new PCM. If you use your PCM you have to set a micro switch to open the reverse gate on the 6 speed trans (our PCM does not have that function).

Trust me you want to find a wrecked GT500 and buy the front clip. Otherwise have deep pockets! Even with the clip you will run into a few issues. I didn't get the shift linkage with mine. I bought a PRO 5.0 shifter and it needed to reuse some of the stock parts (I understand they all do). Those parts...........cost me $500.00 from Ford couldn't find them anywhere!

No your MGW will not work with the new trans. You won't be able to use your headers either. Not sure about your K-member as I went with an aftermarket one. You'll also need to look at your springs as the engine is heavier.

If your going to do the swap and buy from Ford the crate motor and trans I would say your looking at $25,000.00+ (there are just too many small parts your going to get dinged for). If you can get a wrecked GT500 you will do better. Do a lot of your own work and get the motor and trans at the right price......maybe $15,000.00 +. Just depends on what you can get with the wrecked one.

why bother when you can just buy a built shortblock from somewhere like mmr for a fraction of the price?

For me it was better starting platform then the 4.6L 3v. I also got my stuff at the right price.

My motor will most likely be pulled next month and have the rods and pistons replaced. Head and Eaton PP.

The turbo's go on in a couple weeks and I need to get the lower end ready to make some real power!!

However, Mustangbatman makes a good point! Unless you've got some serious plans for the future with the car, you may want to go built shortblock.
