Don't do it. I did for the same reasons you stated. Did not notice any real difference at all. Ended up buying the tuner, and have been happy ever since.

A word of advice: save your money until you can afford both.

i had the 63 series called air charger a while back...it was nice, didn't need a tune, got a little better mpg's, and maybe 8 ponies.........if you don't want to spend the money on a cai and programmer, that is a good as it will get......

I went with the K&N and a sctx3 tuner. which I have been very happy with. The reason I went with the K&N was the hp increase throught out the whole power curve. also if I need to bring it in to the dealer for anything I only have to reflash it backto stock instead of changing theintake back to stock.

I would like to buy a tuner but can't afford it at the moment, and won't be able to for a long time as i'm going to school for a helicopter pilot this fall, and lets just say it is not cheap!! So it's either just in intake and no-tune, or stock. As long as the K&N won't lean out my car then i think i'm happy. If something was wrong the engine light or something would come on right? Jord

I'd save up to buy the tuner + intake.

Well the K&N intake is mediocre. So if you just saved up for both than you could have a really nice set-up. Another thing to consider is that the Xcal2 and Xcal3s will also work on other Ford vehicles. It works with any Ford vehicle with a ODB2 port which is every vehicle from the mid 90s. You'd just have to get a new tune and you'd be set.

I have a K&N right now, I've loved it while I had it. Swear I felt even a slight difference, but it was there, and it sounds nice. I'm actually taking it off this week and replacing it with a JLT and tune, so this ones gonna be up for sale soon if you want it[8D] But overall, I like the K&N for the low cost alternative man, if you want it, do it!

Go for it, I have an Airaid in mine and last time I checked it doesnt require a tune. I dont exactly remember how my car ran with the stock airbox but, I would say its way better than before.
