removing the air intake restricter - good or bad??

I was recently at a Mustang shop and one of the mechanics showed me the air intake restricter in my GT located within the air intake hose. He said it supposedly directs the air in a certain pattern (not sure what that does), but I carefully removed it and noticed a bit of difference when on the freeway - I have more response when I hit it!!

So am I just imagining this extra HP, and what exactly is the purpose of this restricter (better gas mileage) ?

Thanks

Carl

That's what it's for!!! Residual fumes coming out the intake.

Never ever trust a mechanic!!!!

Maybe I explained it wrong, here's a picture of it. It's located in the part of the hose close to the air filter (I don't think it would hurt anything to remove it - I don't think gas could travel that far back)
