Questions for the guys with 3:73s

RE: Questions for the guys with 3:73s
Motive makes them but it is very important that whoever does your gear install is very familiar with motive gears.
A lot of guys get terrible whine with them and think they suck.
The truth is the motive are great gears but are an almost exact fitment and require precise installation. They are no where near as forgiving as FRPP. you could be the same slightly off on the install and the frpp would sound/fell great and the motives would whine.
Again, the motives are good gears, but it is essential you have an installer familiar with them before choosing. Unless you installer has experience and knows precisely what they require for proper install - then stay away and go with the FRPP. If he does, then the motives are great.

I have a manual, and I just got a quote for $550, Ford Racing 3:73s, installed (parts and labor) Does this sound in the ball park, price wise? And....what do you guys think of Ford's gears?

Make sure you get the "correct" FRPP Gears. I think the Ford made gears are 373N? Double check. On the 4.10 the Ford made gears are 410A. FRPP also supplies Motive made gears under 410M.
If your a Track Rat the 4.10+ 26' Tire or 4.30 + 28' is the ticket for a non-poweradder car.
For a street guy the 3.73's are real nice with factory height tires. Likely cost you about 2-3 mpg highway.
I lost 3 mpg highway with the switch from 3.55 to 4.10 and gained 1 mpg city.
I dont know where you live or how good the installer is. Parts (Gears, Lube, Friction Modifier) should run $200-250 and labor $150-300.Its more important to go with an installer you trust than to save a $100 or $200 bucks. This has to be done right.

I have 3:73s. love em!! 99% highway driving. Northern Wisconsin,so towns are few and far between. And small so your through town before ya know it. 4:10s way to impractical. A good install is 500.00 or so.

What are you guys being charged for your gear installations?
What are you guys being charged for your gear installations?
2 Royal Purple qts synthetic & friction modifier $35
4 hrs labor @ $75/ hr = $300
Total= $515
Also, not really any sacrifice at all. I'm automatic, and I went from 3.31's to 3.73's. For example, I went from 2,400 rpm's at 80 mph, to 2,600 at 80 mph Its not drastic at all, just gives you a little more punch off the line, puts you in the powerband quicker, its not night and day. Highway cruising, no problem! Cruising around town, feels the same. I do mostly highway, and I was concerned, but its not that big of a jump, and going to 4.10's probably wouldn've been better, but I didn't want to chance it at the time. I got 500 miles now on them, and no problems, no noises at all.

RE: Questions for the guys with 3:73s
1. My gear install was $275.
2. I would have gone 3.73 were I planning on FI, but I'm not so I thought it better to do 4.10.
3. Whoever said I gave up too much highway with the 4.10, my MPG is exactly the same.
