Howarmat, when you say...

"255/50/17 = 27.1" Diameter
235/55/17 = 27.2" Diameter "

That means that the tire height top to bottome when on rim with the 255 is .1 of an inch shorter, but the tire/tread width is 20mm's wider? If that is the case that would be perfect, i don't care if i have a taller tire, i just want a wider one...

apex18 yes that's what he's saying. 255/50/17 is .1" shorter from top to bottom but 20mm wider.

28 Hopup, do you have any closer pictures of the tire? And one from the back of your car looking at the tires so i can see how much wider they are and look? I really appreciate it, thanks.
Here's a picture I just took, but it's pre-car wash so excuse the dirty quarter panel

P is for passenger vehicle tire.
I cant believe no one has posted the online tire selector yet.
http://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalcold.html
http://www.1010tires.com/TireSizeCal...?action=submit

255 divided by 25.4 equals tread width in inches.
Times this by .50, the aspect ratio, for the sidewall height.
Double the sidewall height and add the rim diameter for tire height.
Times this by Pi, 3.14, for the distance the tire covers in inches per rev.
Then divide 63360 , inches per mile, by the inches per rev for revs per mile.
I just got some 255/45-18s for my 18x8.5 polished bullits and the miles/rev
is really close to stock but they are 3/4 of an inch wider for more tread to the
pavement.

www.tirerack.com shows you recommended rim width for any tire they sell.
The stockers are 17x8. A 255 MIGHT fit on an 8" wide rim.

Discounttiredirect also has a calculator on their site that is useful for figuring out overall diameter and you can use it to make comparisons.

28 Hop up, what are you running in the front? I'm thinking about just running the stock tires in the front, and those in the back..

For now I'm running the stock Pirellis up front, but I like my tires to macth front & back so I'll probably buy another set of NT450's - perhaps in 255 up front.

For my tires, I run 32 psi in the summer, and 35 in the winter. At the track, I adjust the PSI accordingly...
