Please help me troubleshoot a squeaking noise...
So I started my car up this morning and I heard a terrible squeaking noise from the engine. The sound went away by the time I was up to normal operating temperature, and appears to be driving fine now.
I am assuming for now that this is belt related, I haven't really had a chance to check it out since I am at work. I will check the condition of the belts. How do you know if the issue is not the belt, but the tension in the belt? Is there an easy way to check this? Also, is adjusting the belt an easy think to do? What kind of tools would I need? Any other tips for troubleshooting this?
Also, I have UDPs so I am wondering if it is related, although I have had them on for a year now with no problems or sounds.

RE: Getting Belt Squeak
Inspect the pullies and see if there are any with some rubber residue on them. If so, run a flat head screewdiver lightly across the pully while it is running (be very careful!) untill the rubber comes off. My V6 made a bad squeeling noise becaus the center idler pully was coated with rubber from the belt. Also, give belt dressing a try.

RE: Getting Belt Squeak
I just dealt with this last week.
While my belt was a bit old, that wasn't really the problem. The idler pulley had somewhat uneven wear indicating that it was slowing down a bit for part of it's rotation.
I changed the belt and that pulley (which was an over the counter part), and it's fine now.

RE: Getting Belt Squeak
How imminent is belt failure once they start making noise? Think I can get another 50 miles out of the car before I change the belts? The sound goes away after a minute or so.
Isn't the stuff that you put on the belts to stop the squealing bad, because it just masks the symptons instead of solving the problem?
