Group IV or Group V oils are considered "true" synthetic.
In the USA, group III oils (mineral base stocks converted into high quaility lubricants) are considered Synthetic as well.

Mobil 1 has been my choice since the stuff came out back in the seventy's. Never had an issue. Mobile one is the only oil I will use in my vehicles, from engine to rearend. I'm sure RP is a good oil too but I wonder, how much better to justify the cost?
RP, along with amsoil and redline, are true synthetics, mobile 1 is not

It is not 100% fully synthetic.
Royal purple, Amsoil or Redline like the poster said are though.
I like to use RP in my car.

they just explained it, its considered synthetic but not "TRUE" synthetic. meaning there are oils that are "better" but to what extent I don't know, but probably not much.

ALL PAO OILS are very aggressive on the seals of all units it is introduced into. They tend to produce seal porousity like pouring water into a sponge, it will absorb it for a while and then start to pour out the other side. Many people using synthetic oils think that because the molecule is smaller, it will readily pour out of holes. What they don’t realize is that the oil caused the leaks that they are complaining about. Also the soluability of the oils are not very good, so the additive packages that are put into the synthetic oils, drop out and end up in the oil pan in a relatively short time. These two characteristics are not very desirable!Amsoil is a PAO based oil. Its your choice.

Some more oil info I gleaned from the Mobil 1 site:

All motor oils are made up of base oils and additives. In general, fully synthetic motor oils contain non-conventional, high-performance fluids. Synthetic blends usually use some non-conventional, high-performance fluids in combination with conventional oil.

To meet the demanding requirements of today's specifications (and our customers' expectations), Mobil 1® uses high-performance fluids, including polyalphaolefins (PAOs), along with a proprietary system of additives. Each Mobil 1 viscosity grade uses a unique combination of synthetic fluids and selected additives in order to tailor the viscosity grade to its specific application.
