4.0L plenum cover paint ??

i bought a plenum cover for my 4.0 form american muscle it comes paintedsilver but i need to paint it red what do i use to scuff it up so the red paint will stick or how do i go about this just wondering??? any help would be fantastic

maybe some rough sandpaper to rough it up some... not too sure though...
