Im a Tire Idiot. Who wants to help me out!?
Alright, so my stock BFG's are gone with 14k miles. I have the factory 18" wheels.
I need some new ones. But I completely hated the BFGs, no grip at all... it felt like I was floating on top of the road.
Now, I wantan extreme high-performance tire that has good tread life. (hopefully that is possible.) Being in the south, snow is not a problem whatsoever.
I also autocross the car alot so I need something that will last me a bit longer.
Some guys at the track told me to go with 275's, but all that means to me is expensive and wide.
What isyour reccomended tire size and tire? Or could you give me a few GOOD tire sizes? besides 235/50/18... or should I stick with that size?

As far as size, not sure I am running 20" shelby wheels, but as far as grip goes, I am running Nitto NT555's and the grip is amazing, I live in Las Vegas and it is around 110 to 120 degrees during the summer and I am still getting a ton of grip. On my second mustang, I have gone through lots of tires, and this is the first time running Nitto's, and I won't buy anything else now. Awesome grip!!

Most likely your stock 18" wheels can safely handle 255's. I replaced my stock 18 x 8.5 fanblades and BFG 235/50/18 tires with 18 x 9.5 and 275/40/18's. Definately looks badass with the wider rubber. Youcan safely go to 255's on the stock 18's.
As far as type,I needed an all season and I'm very happy with the Eagle F1 AS's. For you, a summer tire will suffice. I suggest you go to tirerack.com or any of the other tire websites and do some research. Lots of great info out there.

ok here are a few chooses from cheap to expensive but, the michelin have great life length but are in a way ugly but good in the snow, i have sold these to a mustang guy who hated what he had and loved these.
Falken ZE-912 - 235/50ZR18 149 at sears
and
Michelin Pilot MXM4 223 at sears
but there are many to choose from so its like a pair of shoes you need to make the choose but these are both big sellers and michelin i have seen last a long time if you rotate every 6000 miles. if i were you and this is what im going to do is to get 4 rims off ebay cheap that would fit for winter and choose a good summer tire on your rims you have on know but good luck and check out sears web site they have pictures and good write ups

Thanks to all. I am afraid Derf is right though. I might have to get a seperate set of rims/tires for autocross.
Vegas, I looked up reviews for the nitto 555's and they actually look like a good tire for me... and alot cheaper than what I was looking at. Thanks!
and Nuke, Do you thinkmine could handle 275/40/18, or would that be pushing it?
do you have them all around or just on the back? also do you have any pictures? thank you so much for the help.

I went with the BFG G-force T/A KDW-2 255-45ZR18s
on the stock OEM18"x8.5" polished Bullit rims. A 275 wide
in this brand tire was recommended for 9" wide rims.
I didnt want to push it too far so I went 255 wide.
And no rubbing as it might with a 275 on these 50mm offset rims.
The Nitto website should show you the recommended rim widths
for each of their tire styles/sizes. I dont see a 275/40-18
going on a 18"x8.5" wide rim properly.
They dont feel at alllike I am floating on top of the road.
Same outer diameter as the stock 235/50-18s so no speedo
correction needed.

uh oh.
you've brought a new factor into the equation.
so if I go with say 255/45/18 i'll have to get a speedo correction?
Can i do this myself with my SCT X3?
Or would my installer do it?

'07 - Live it up! call up discount tire and get yourself the shelby gt500 setup. Chrome 18x9.5 gt500 wheels with 255s front and 285s rear. Have them throw nitto 555s on 'em. I love the setup, and looks fantastic. (if I do say so).

WOW! 14K on your BFG's? I must really be in the minority here as I just passed 58K on my original 18" BFG's. I plan on replacing them in about a month, but can easily get another 10K on them. Anyone using Perelli tires on their GT?
