me being someone who has owned both....YES you can easily build a gt to BEAT a stock gt500...my 05 with the saleen mods etc beat my brothers gt500 about a year ago....however....if you plan to race a gt500...and you do all that....verify he / she is stock still...go over on the svt website and shelby website and there are TONS of gt500 owners modding the crap out of their cars as well....its very easy to get hp out of these blocks...I for one will be easy pray to some as I will be very close to stock...(Just CAI and tune) but for someone to think that all gt500 owners are staying stock...may want to do some research...its easy to get power out of these cars....ultimately....I would still choose my 08 gt500 at $500 below msrp than my gt I sold....but thats just me....remember...someone can always build a FASTER car....so Id say build away on your gt and get your power...follow allot of MF members advice here...allot of guys / gals here have built some mean *** machines....good luck

I think too if you had slicks on the GT and street radials on the GT500 that'd be a pretty good race...going with you have a supercharger with 500+hp at the crank...
