The CAI will cause you to spectacularly fail the visual part of the smog test. The tester will look, and you will instantly fail, just like you'll fail if your gas cap doesn't seal well enough.

Looks like I just need to be patient, eh?

Anyone recommend a shop down there that can do a CAI, cat back, and tune? I'll be in Chula Vista.

Preston's tires in La Mesa does all of that work. They were recommended to me by a guy who does serious mods on almost all of his vehicles; so much so that he pushes the drive train to the breaking limits.

as for looking under cars...i've seen them take mirrors on rods and hold them under the car. i dont know what they are looking for, but they have mirrors that they look underneath with. not sure if they do that at all the places. I want to get the Steeda CAI with predator. does anyone know if that'll affect any type of smog check in california???

They're looking for cats (not the kind you run over) and O2 sensors with the mirrors - or any other exhaust mods. As I mentioned above, unless the CAI has a CARB number on it, it will cause you to fail the visual part of the smog check.

Relax, though - if you bought the car in CA, you have until like 2011 before it needs to be checked. It doesn't take long to uninstall the CAI and go back to the stock map for the test. A lot harder than (ahem!) long tube headers and h-pipe.

so I guess I'll stand the wait and mod it after I get down there. Once I pass how long do I have before I have to get it checked again?

JBA Racing is here in San Diego, too.

Do you think they would notice my SC? hehe

Hell, by 2011, my car will be off the CA roads, and will be a dedicated track car.

No doubt. The Stang is my 15th car in 24 years of driving - I haven't had the same car for 6 years ever. I think the longest was 3 years.
