Do we have Event Data Recorders in our cars?
If so, what all are they recording? Can they be used against us?
I was reading an article about the Nissan GTR and its VSDR (Vehicle Status Data Recorder) which is ALWAYS running recording several different things such as vehicle speed, engine speed, whether the computer aids were on or off (Nissan can void your warranty if you drive the GTR with the aids turned off).
Pretty scary. Looks like 2012 will be there year when the government will put out guidelines as to what all EDR's must record. EDR won't be forced on vehicles, but several automakers are using them already. Nissan has them on all of their current vehicles.

That list could be a little outdated based on the few number of 08 cars listed. I'm guessing that list was released mid-year last year so it's missing most of 08 models. Since Mustang has been on that list since 2000 from what I noticed I'm guessing 08 is no exception.
If you tamper with it, it will show up.

a few months back I had my engine light come on while just backing out of a parking space at walmart. I called a friend of mine who is the service manager at the Ford down the road from me and told him what happened, where I was at, and what I was doing when the light came on and he told me to bring it in. as soon as I got there, he plugged up his computer and it told him everything my car was doing at the time the car threw the code (engine light came on). it told him my speed, rpm's, temp of the motor, etc...then gave him a paragraph about the problem the car was having.
he looked and me and laughed after I saw that and told me it was a good thing my story matched up with what the computer told him because he could have busted me in a lie....
needless to say, I was impressed & freaked out at the same time....

No, this isn't the OBDII engine monitor for smog that can be cleared for Codes. It's an EPROM in the PCM that remains intact (memory) when the power is cut. Otherwise it would be pretty useless in an accident if the electricity were to be cut. Like a severe enough accident where they would want to check it. Kind of like the black box of a plane if you will.
