Default dumb question, but what is rev matchin, should i be doing it?

I keep hearing the term rev-matching? What does it meean exactly. I have a 5pd, should i be doing it? I suspect giving it gas to match the revs when you downshift hard, but is that necessary?

Just makes your shifts a lot smoother.

You got it, matching the revs for the downshift. It can actually put wear on your car if not done right. It's really unneccasary

+1

using the clutch/trans to slow down isnt the best thing for it, but rev matching incorrectly can be bad also. best bet is to just use the brakes to slow down and when you need to downshift, just put the rpm's about where they should be (this is where memory comes in) and just normally let the clutch pedal out.

Downshifting w/out matching the revs wouldn't be nearly as smooth as rev matching. Plus... its better for the car.

Here is the technique I use (not all the time in day to day driving but always on a track):

Heel-Toe 1

Heel-Toe 2
