40 MPH...What gear are you in?
#41
Holy crap I drive like a granny. I have alway been shifting to 5th at 40 miles. The acceration sucks ***. By shifting to 5th would you be saving a lot more gas, than to be crusing in 4th between 40ish MPH?

i use gears to speed up, but if im cruising im in 5th, doesnt matter if im in a 20mph school zone or doing 110 at 3am going to work.....driving in 4th at 40mph is a waste of gas when you can shift into 5th and drop the rpm down a few hundred...at 20mph with 3.73 gears im at pretty much idle...if im just speeding up from a light getting to the speed limit, i shift at 2-3 grand until 4th, then i run 4th out until i get to the speed i want, whether its 45 or 75 it doesnt matter, then i go into 5th and cruise

Anyway, when driving conservatively which I do 75% of the time, I shift around 2k rpm, and even lower than that if I am not accelerating. I can easily use 5th gear at 40mph and lower. At first I was surprised by that and then I figured its all the hp and torque that allows put-putting around at really low rpm.

I just read another post from a different thread, it says that if you lug the engine at 1200 rpm , you would waste more gas to try to get up to speed than if you were to just stay in higher gear. This thread https://mustangforums.com/forum/show...ighlight=shift

When I shift under 2K I get close to 30MPG on country roads, much, I usually do that for about a week at a time, then I have to stomp it and shoot that MPG to heck, I usually shift before 2500 on normal driving anyways
I drive like granny, except when I wanna go

well I'm teaching the wife how to drive the stang. PRetty much telling her how to drive the way I drive when I am just cruzing around not being a jack ***.
I say try to keep it between 2 and 3k rpms for daily driving, anything less and it will start to bog a bit and you will need to use more throttle then otherwise needed to achieve acceleration you want. over 3k and your just wating gas (for daily driving)
Right at 40, really depends what the road looks like in front of me (is there a stop sign comming close, or slower car comming up in front of you) if I know I'm going to be stopping or even slowing, I will hold 3rd to about 45. If it looks wide open and I'm just getting up to speed from a stop anyway, I might go to 4th a bit early (like 35) and just be lazy. If theres a nice set of corners comming up and no ones around, I'll probably drop back to 2nd and floor it, but thats for another post ;-)

I finally have my mustang tagged and titled, so I have been driving it this week, and needles to say it is completely different than my 00 6spd Celica (I get wood in this car!)
My question is kind of a no brainer, but a lot of the roads around my house are 30-40mph zones, and it seems like 40-43 mph is right between 4th and 5th for cruising speeds. While 5th rides OK if the road is completely level, it feels like the engine strains a bit under light acceleration.
Obviously this would consititute shifting to 4th, but my celica could be in 6th gear at 40-43mph and it did not feel like it was straining under light acceleration.
So what gear are you guys in at that speed?
