its a lot more than that, my tuner started from scratch basically took him almost 4 hours to tune my car just how i wanted it..

It all depends on the car. In your situation with the mods you have done, what they were doing was probably fine. I know of plenty of people/shops that start with a base file and tweak it to your cars specific needs.

I'm not dyno knowledgable, but what diff would it make whether they start with the stock tune or a canned tune, as long as they know what to adjust to get where you want to go? I'll keep an eye on this one as I'm sure I'll become more edge-u-mucated as the experts post...

Most tuners will just modify an existing tune, much easier and cheaper. However if you did a full build or something that would probably start from scratch.

It is a lot easier to edit than it is to create - so what I've seen is that the tuner will start with a tune and then adjust on the dyno for what needs to be done to accomplish the results.

Jim and Cobra are correct.....some dyno tuning is from scratch (can be very expensive like writing the actual code after datalogging) and others are from existing tunes tailored to your car and its spec needs to run right and safely. Remember that not all motors are the same even if we all have 4.6L 3V etc....... JMO

For instance I had a tune done for my Whipple and it was based off the Whipple procal tool and fine tuned from there spec to my car and supporting mods. The tune was not "right" so some additional tuning was done and "perfect" for me (might not be for others) and later after other mods or just some tuning in general you can data log a few WOT runs and have the car tuned for driveability, more HP/TQ, set different shift points (for autos) etc....
