If the windows get frozen, how do the windows go down?

I had a 04 sunfire that had power windows & they would freeze. In the winter mornings, I would get in the car & start it up. My drivers window wouldnt go down because it was frozen! When I pushed the button down, I would here this nasty gear grinding sound. Thats why I am wondering how our windows will react since its an automatic thing.
