Default About to be on my 3rd alternator.

Pretty crazy how sucky these are. My first one started throwing the Cam Shaft Sensor code at 28.6k miles back in May of this year. Its replacement started doing the same thing 2 weeks ago with only 8.5k miles on it and this one is even worse the the first. The car would surge when just cruising or getting up to speed on the freeway. Ford just called and confirmed it and said the replacement will be in tomorrow.

I know my stereo has to have something to do this it, but 6 months? That's pretty sad. I've only killed one other alternator before and it was at least 8 years old.

Yep, they only rate the OEM alternator to just about
full OEM load. The days of the 125A alternator are long gone
and one just big enough for the OEM electronics are being
installed because of cost factors. Up grade to a bigger alternator
and leave the troubles behind.

have you taken the time to check over all your stereo connections to make sure that when the ignition is off, so is everything else?

What would that have to do with the alternator going bad? As for your question, my HU plays until I open the door even if the ignition is off. Once the HU is off, everything shuts down.

Different topic. Does anyone know if a bad alt would effect mpg?

If you had underdrive pulleys I'd blame it on them, but in this case it's probably your system. You ever considered buying an aftermarket one that's pushing more amps? I think I've seen a couple online, but can't remember where. I know you got warranty at all, but if they don't provide you a rent a car for free (in my case they don't) then it might just be worth it to get it now.

Yeah, I'm actually lucky. The car still runs just fine. This time is going just like the last. I drop the car off, they do their test and say it needs an alt. I pick the car back up. The next day I drop it off again and they put the alt in.

This dealership is about 5 miles from my job so I just have the dealership curry me back and forth or have a coworker drive me.
