Most of the "non-Bel, non-Escort, non-Valentine" detectors are not much more than shopping mall, Wal-Mart and Grocery store detectors. Stick with the Bels, Escorts or V1 as listed in the testing site I posted above.

Best bet overall is to learn to use a "rabbit" along with your RD. If you're the only guy on the road you're most likely going to get nailed, period.

For those not willing to plunk down $300-400...there is a very good alternative.
You wont find these in big box stores, but can order them from specialty stores (and Amazon too I think).
The Whistler Pro Series (either 68 or 78). They are $90-150, but all share the same electronics. Some quick research finds them ranked as the best buy for that price point and they hold their own against $400 competitors. A good review is here:

I have the 68 myself ($83 at Amazon now) and could not be happier. I have a Rocky Mountain (a 430 I think) and there is no question that the 68 blows it away. NO false's (but I have X off) only activity is when LEO are around. Could not be happier.
I am not an "intentional speeder" but occasionally I look down and find myself creeped well into illegal speeds. It seemed after I put the 18's on...the car is quieter and more stable...80+ feels like a comfortable highway speed.
Are these comparable to V1's? No...but they do a very good job. I have no reservations in stating that these beat 2-3 year old top-shelf technology....hands down.

Radar detectors pick up false alarms. If you live out in the sticks, you wont get false alarms, but if you live in the city, you will get them all the time. Look at the escort 9500i. I upgraded from the 8500 to the 9500 a couple of months ago and i love it. It uses gps and a memory so you can store false alarms and they wont annoy you every single day if you drive by the same stores. If you have any other detector, you will have to hit the mute button every time you drive past best buy, circuit city, walgreens, ect. Anything with an automatic door will set detectors off. Plus the range seems about 50% better than my 8500 which means on the highway, i pick up speed traps close to a mile in advance. I got mine from southernmustangparts.com who is a vendor here.
The Escort products work great! and we are still offering up the free invisicord and SCP mount for a nice clean install!!!
