I called new takeoff and they said the 8.8 is brand new and then they put FRPP gears in. Once again it's a howl at 40mph and nowhere else. The newtakeoff guy thought it's strange and my mechanic said to just break them in and hopefully the noise will go away.

Cam do you go to the BM gym often? I'm there everyday, so I can let you check it out then.

Howl's not good. That's usually an indication of pinion bearing or improper pinion nut torque (or preload). Someone probably didn't do a good job putting the gears in (hope I"m wrong). You should hear NO HOWLING. A little whine maybe at times (if backlash is not adjusted right).

Hope it works out ok for you. Also, just for grins, make sure you have the proper fluid level (a little below the fill-plug hole).

thanks for the update. was a little confused then. thought they would have been the rear end of a bullitt and not just the 8.8 with 3.73 gears installed after the fact. thanks for clearing this up for me.

Well maybe I can't tell howl and whine apart lol...

I'd say it was quieter today so hopefully it will start to fade away. I'd be more worried if I heard this noise all the time but I only hear it at 40 MPH, it's so weird.

I just noticed today when driving around 40mph that my FRPP 373s have some "whine", too. But below about 35 and above 45 it's quiet. The sound is when you are on the gas and not coasting. Like a higher-pitch sound is what it's like. That's probably what you are hearing too.

I would attribute this somewhat, at least in my case, to a backlash adjustment that is 'looser' then specification by a few thousandths.
