Default Tires on a 9.5" rim

I currently have 285/40/18 on my rear 9.5" rims. Is it possible to put 295/45/18 on them?

Reason being, I have 4.10 gears and if I supercharge, would the larger tire give the effect of having 3.73's?

I think you can and yes it will effectively change the ratio of the gear with a taller sidewall by how much I have no idea.....I have 285's on a 10" wide rim and I was told I could do 305 or maybe 315. After all 10 mm is not much more width.

Thanks.

Now that I look into it, two 295/45/18 tires will cost me more than switching my gears back to the 3.55's.

Seriously, am I really ever gonna top out 5th in my heavy convertible with a centrifugal blower? If my car clocks anything faster than 13.51 I'm looking at a roll cage anyway and talking a whole new level of investment.

faster than 13.51 for a roll cage? MG, thats just silly.

and no, getting those tires will not give you the effect of a smaller gear.

in tires, xxx/yy/zz, the x's are the size of the footprint, so 295, I dont know what the units are, but is obviously wider than 285. the 2nd number is the side wall height HOWEVER, this number is relative to the footprint number. so a wider tire with a larger sidewall number can actually have the SAME wall height. figure out your outside diameter of your tires and try to find a tire that is a couple inches taller, this will give you the effect of smaller gears. maybe something like a 295/55/18 if that exists.

A 285/40 TIRE IS 11.22" WIDE AND WITH A TOTAL DIAMETER OF 26.97"

A 295/45 TIRE IS 11.61" WIDE AND WITH A TOTAL DIAMETER OF 28.45"

YOUR RIMS AT 9.5 " HAVE A 10.5" BEAD TO BEAD WIDTH. SO USING THE 295 TIRES THE TIRE WILL OVERHANG PAST THE RIM ABOUT .55" EACH SIDE. SOMETIMES THIS IS GOOD TO PROTECT THE RIM BUT IF TOO MUCH IT COULD WEAR YOU TIRE PREMATURELY IN THE MIDDLE. THE IDEAL WIDTH FOR A TIRE SHOULD BE ABOUT 1/4" OVERHANG PAST THE RIM ON EACH SIDE OF THE RIM. IN YOUR CASE WITH A RIM OF 10.5" TOTAL WIDTH THAT WOULD BE ABOUT A 255 OR 275 TIRE. ALSO THE BIGGER THE TIRE THE MORE WEIGHT YOUR ADDING AND MORE ROTATIONAL MASS TO DEAL WITH. ALSO TALLER TIRES MIGHT RUB AGAINST YOUR FENDER WELL IN THE FRONT

LARGER TOTAL DIAMETER TIRES WILL CHANGE YOUR FINAL GEAR RATIO. BY HOW MUCH???DONT KNOW.

Sorry Specter, I was wrong. New England Dragway, I was off 2 tenths.

• Convertibles running 13.49 or quicker without a roll bar"

Don't know. What's a stock GT with intake/tune, 15.50? If I get a Vortech that adds 100hp, will I shave 2 seconds?

You should be able to get 13.5 with the mods you have now. If you have gears, CAI and tune you should be there. I've never seen a track use the 13.5 standard for Verts. Usually it's 11.99 or faster which is NHRA standards.

As far as tire size is concerned, the above posts are mostly correct but not 100% true. Every tire manufacture here in the US uses the same numbrs on the side of the tire, but the actual diameter and footprint will vary even within the manufacture's own different tires. So the best way to know is to find the tire you want and see what the manufacture reccommends for the rim width.

Tire rack is really good about this and every manufacture's website has a list of what should fit. With a 9.5 wide rim you should be able fit the 295's easily, but with some you may not be able to and with others you may be able to go larger.

I'm running 305 DR's on a 9.5'' rims w/o issue. They do overhang the rim a bit, just enough to protect the rim since they don't have the "protector" strip.

Someone ran me into a curb last saturday night near University of Texas. Drunk college kid I guess.. she looked about 15 years old lol. Came over into my lane and I had to swerve, bit the curb. I thought I had toasted the rim but when I got out to check only a small bit of rubber had been scraped off. I think the tire is still sound, unfortunate incident but the tire protected the rim. Not sure if that's a good thing.. the 305 DR's are ~$250 ea. and so are the rims... ah well.. I've learned that it doesn't pay to purchase expensive rims...unless you have a show car.

OH, i forgot you are vert. my bad

and about the tire. I was being dumb lol. you increased the footprint AND the sidewall numbers. its going to be taller lol sorry.

I know guys in fbodies that run a 28" tire in situations like that. I may need to this year on spray otherwise Ill be hitting 5th w/ the 4.10s
