Auto shifter won't shift

Have a 05 auto GT Mustang. Today it woudn't shift out of park to rev. The plastic covering around the shift handle has come loose and hanging up. The dealership told me I need to order a new shifter as there no fixing mine, $289. Is it a easy job replacing the shifter?

Is there a dealership that offers discounts on oem parts? If you know of one would you please give me contact info.

Thanks for any help

First off, welcome to the forum Royalpaul. What I would do is check ebay, check with forum members to see if any have one for sale, or consider buying an aftermarket like TCI. I would not buy a new one from the dealership. Just my 2 cents. Hope this helps.

If I were in your situation, I'd go with the TCI Ratchet Shifter.

I bought the TCI ratchet shifter. Unfortunately they seem to be backordered. Doug at Bamachips told me it'll be about a week to a week and a half.

But from another member on here that has one installed it's a very high quality unit. MUCH more than the stock plastic thing.

If you decide to go with the stock shifter you may want to check: teamfordparts.com They sell oem parts for wholesale. I have ordered a few things from them in the past.

yay! another kansan :) welcome to the forums. depending on what part of kansas you are from, try bob allen ford. for the most part, i've had pretty good luck with them as far as service goes; they may be able to fix it without ordering a bunch of stuff.

newtakeoff.com might have it.

Thanks for your help. Bought this car for my wife. The TCI ratchet shifter looks good and thanks for the wright up. That shifter won't work for wife, got to keep it simple. Your wright up will help me put on the new stock one.

Is there a after market shifter better than the stock one and only has the single auto swifter?

The only aftermarket shifter is he TCI one. It's either that or the OEM shifter I'm afraid.

B&M was working on a ratchet shifter but that's pretty much dead now as far as I know.
