Does the 540hp GT500 make up for the lack of power in the new GT?

MM&FF brought up a good point in the newest issue referring to the Fox body. Whether the decisions made at the time were accidental, intensional, for the better or for the worse. The Fox body, running as long as it did using the same body/chassis, made it a modders dream. Cheap, plentiful cars, helped the aftermarket become enormous. I'd love to see more ***** under the hood myself, but its hard to complain about the enormahuge aftermarket support the Fox got. With the popularity of the S197, the aftermarket is already huge, with new stuff constantly coming out. Keeping it cheap is what kept the Mustang alive while all other "average mans cars" got the axe. My only gripe about the new car is the butt. Overall, its a good evolution.

The reason it doesn't really make up for it is the pricing.. if they keep it at 45,000 msrp 40,000 invoice that is still a great deal for a 500hp vehicle. But.. when the Camaro will have 420hp and be priced at 30,000 and the new mustang at 28,000 with 320.. That still doesn't compare.. the only way you can make up for it is with a middle ground 35,000 boss mustang (as was mentioend earlier) I'll have to repost the link sometime but when the 05s came out they came out with a 400hp 5.0 engine in a demo car that they never released.. another option would be a very conservative FI setup only problem is warranty concerns w/o a forged block which would cost more to the consumer.. but a 35,000 400-450hp car that weighs less than the camaro may be the ticket to fixing the mustangs name.. every $10,000 price increase moves the buyer to a new income bracket.. basically means payments go up by as much as $200/month

I don't think they'll ever go back to the 5.0. Before the 2010 model came out there were rumors about a 6.0 or a 3.7 twin turbo for the gt model. I think the best way to go would have been the twin turbo. 6.0 would have eaten unbelievable amounts of gas, and if you keep it out of the boost with the tt gas would be very nice, not to mention how much hp you can get out of upgrading the turbo by itself! Either way I think something needs to change soon.

The GT500 increase in power/gearing/and handling improvements are appreciated. I look at it this way : The'10 Mustang GT with a rating of 315 h.p. with basically simular mods: gearing etc, has improved performance significantly, so the 40 h.p. increase in the GT500 will reflect a nice gain as well. Hell, NO it doesnt make up for the lack in power! What's the deal, is Ford being paid off by the Aftermarket to NOT bump the power? I always hear that Ford is trying to make the GT more appealing to the avg. person, but I'm wondering how more power counteracts that goal. Besides, a lot of people DONT use their GT as a daily driver, even though you could. Most enthusiasts buy GT's and pump them up, and I know a lot of us would really appreciate a powerful n/a engine lineup to choose from as an option for our GT's. 350-450HP would be nice, and if you leave the compression at 9:8:1 or lower it wouldn't cut into their supercharger market either. GIVE ME POWER!
