Oil Change Questions??
Hey guys, couple questions on oil change for my 2006 v6. I always get in done by someone since it was under warranty, but since my warranty is about over. I might as well start doing it right and doing my own oil changes. I Used to do them in my jeep which was a piece of cake since you didn't have to lift it or anything. My questions are, how hard is it in the mustangs? Can i do it, with two jack stands. Is it easy to get to the filter? What kind of oil does it take? I don't use full synthetic, i just change the regular synthetic oil, about every 2500 miles. Does anyone also know what filter i need? I'm going to go to walmart and get it. Thanks a lot.

I use ramps but I suppose jackstands will work fine.
It's very easy to get to everything once up on the ramp or stands. Be sure you have the right size socket (I can't recall what size) for the drain plug, a filter wrench, a pan that'll hold at least 6 quarts and a funnel (and a roll of paper towels).
The Motorcraft filter is available at Wal-Mart (I can't recall what # but you can find out when at the store). If you don't want to use full synthetic (Mobil1 would be my choice if you did), then any of the name brand synthetic blends is fine. Wal-Mart might even sell the Motorcraft blend which came in our Stangs from the factory. The V6 takes 5W30 (not sure of the amount for the V6 since the V8 takes 6 quarts). Buy an extra quart.
Also, 2500 mile change frequency is awfully conservative. I'd do 3,000 miles with dino oil, 5,000 - 7,000 miles with blend and 8,000 - 10,000 with full synthetic.

Check your owners manual.. I don't have a V6. But the Amsoil website says the V6 takes 5 quarts.
BTW, there's a TacoBill sticky that has a "How to" on changing your oil.

I use the Amsoil 0W20 and the Amsoil EA filter only because I can afford it. It's "best" (god forgive me) if you don't change your oil until 15,000 or more miles. Otherwise, it's "just as good".
If I was watching my pennies, I'd be using M1 in the Stang (but I do use M1 in my SUV).
