Default vandalism or paranoia

ok, so today I am pumping gas and a notice a very significant amount of dirt, not dust, on the bottom of the gas opening. I take a pinch, fearing its sugar, and its nothing but dirt. How the heck did it get up there? has anybody else gotten a "pinchable" amount of dirt on the inside of the gas cap, or did someone put a handful of dirt in my tank?

BTW, if some jerk did put dirk down my tank, the fuel filter should be able to handle it right?

the amount was twice what is on the pic, but I pinched it....

Don't worry about it... it's dirt that probably got there when you washed your car.

Get a locking gas cap, though...

A normal complaint 05-09 has no shield behind the wheel to prevent the fly up, the 2010 will have the shield, Paranoia!

The dirt is coming from behind the plastic filler neck. Pull on the black plastic and watch the dirt fall out.

Yes the pre-filter on the pump will stop any large pieces and the inline fuel filter will trap anything that could clog the injectors.

other than the "insane" comment, thanks a lot guys. You know, you love your car and you always worry someone is going to mess with it. Nice to have a friendly forum to vent on. Again, thanks.

its paranoia ....the back of all mustangs get a decent amt of dust and dirt on them and this is the result. Its not air tight and yes the fuel filter can handle it but if it was a significant amt the fuel filter would clog and the car would suffer as a result. I would not worry.....again disclaimer- JMO
