If you can't tell the difference by looking at them, then the CS bumper would meet your need.
And what exactly is this subtle difference?

The subtle difference is that the black textured portion at the bottom of the bumper extends all the way down the sides to the wheel well on a GT 500 bumper. On the CS bumper, that textured portion does not extend around to the sides. It terminates at the exhaust openings. So if you want to leave that textured area black around the entire bumper, you can't really do it with the CS bumper. It took me a few looks in person to notice this.

I have a yellow GT with an unpainted chin spoiler and black side rocker panels (yes, I changed these) so I wanted that black area around the entire rear bumper to match the front and sides. It cost me a lot extra to do that and it chaps my rear just thinking about it, but it's all for the cause.

You are correct that the CS bumper does get painted on the sides but, you are flat wrong that they are not the VERY same bumper. The 6R3Z-6320049-BA GT/CS & Shelby GT Accessory Rear Bumper and the GT500 Rear Bumpers are "Identical" and the textured portion fully extend around the sides on the GT/CS & Shelby GT Accessory Rear Bumper. This is why I have this topic stickly in the FAQ section of the forum. I have placed both the bumpers side by side prior to paint and they are indeed identical in every aspect. Had you purchased the 6R3Z-6320049-BA GT/CS & Shelby GT Accessory Rear Bumper and only painted the upper half of the bumper as they do on the GT500 you would have the very same bumper you have now but for alot less money.

When your looking at a CS at the dealship you will not see the textured portion on the sides because it is coverd up buy simple body work prior to paint thus givning it a smooth aperance.

Call Kevin the Parts Manager Clevenger Ford Lincoln Mercury Work Ph# 1-800-570-5554 Ask For KC. He will know that answer to that question for sure but I'm betting your not going to have an issue fiting it on an 09 GT
