I mostly want it for drag but i daily drive the car and sometimes take it into the twisties i found around san antonio. So maybe i dont want to do that.
275s on a stock 17x8??
I have seen this multiple times but i have also heard its a bad idea... So whats the deal? How are people doing with this setup.
The minimum width for a 275/40 (generally 9") is wider than the minimum width for a 275/50 (7.5" in the case of the Nitto).
275/40 is a much more commonly available size than 275/50, so you'll see frequent cautions against "275's on 8" wheels". It simply covers the majority of peoples' questions.
The reason for not going below the minimum recommended width has to do with things like extra sidewall flex and heat generation while driving and exactly where in the sidewalls it gets concentrated. It's not that the minimum recommended width is a hard "pass/fail" boundary, but it is at a point below which the tire industry is uncomfortable with any added risk of tire failure.
Just because a tire looks wider means nothing if the tread is not sitting flat on the road - think about the shoulders being pulled up off the road so the sidewalls can pinch in enough to fit into a narrow wheel.
"Appearance" reasons nearly always ignore safety and engineering in the name of somebody's or some group's subjective opinion that doesn't see the whole picture. Minimum wheel width for a given tire size is one place where "appearance" is not a valid reason for making a technically poor choice.

see sig. mickey thompson e/t street radial 275/40r17 on 17x8 inch rim. fits perfectly, really hooks at the track.
I use these on stock 17x8 rims; but M/T recommends 9" minimum. I drive them to and from the track on some windy roads, but I don't push it hard in the corners. For to/from and at the drag strip, they are fine.
