Damn I missed the show!

FWIW, I really don't have much (if any) soot in my tailpipes. I wipe them down a few inches inside when I wash which is every few weeks. I have 7500 miles on the car bought new 9 months ago.

I think the black soot tends to accumulate more for those with O/R exhaust. I never had any until the O/R X pipe

the black soot is a natural byproduct of the cylinders firing, thats why the valves, pistons, exhaust manifolds are black. although you are correct you shouldnt be able to clean them then have the soot back the next day that would mean you are running too rich. as far as smelling the exhaust/fingering the tailpipe im sure that kind of stuff works for some ppl but do u know the difference from rich/lean or the smell of soot/pistons melting??? i know the only a/f i would trust is a w/b for an accurate reading.(yes i said fingering the tailpipe continue to laugh)

Dang I missed it too.

Even after the edit, onederful's last sentence is still funny.

Anyway, it's pretty much impossible to not have black in your exhaust unless you have a car that runs on water or all electric (in that case there is no exhaust, lol).

BTW, what's the point in cleaning it? It's on the inside of the pipes and it's not only normal but you can't see it unless you're right up on it. Even then no one will think anything of it b/c that's just how it is.
