synthetic oils: Do you Trust?

I actually just had analysis performed on my last oil change using Mobile 1... I got some slightly unexpected results that make me think I'm going to completely disregard the extended protection of at least Mobile 1 and just change every 5k...

Amsoil in the Stang at 8K-10K miles. I have close to 29K on the odometer.
M1 in all 3 of my SUV's at 10K miles. Sold the '90 with 205K on the odometer. Sold the '00 with 153K on the odometer. My '08 only has 10K on it. None ever used or burned oil
If I thought doing the oil analysis would be cost and time effective, I'd probably go longer between oil changes. So, yes, I trust synthetics.

Mobil 1 change it once a year, which is about 3500 miles.
I use Ford synth blend in the Edge and change it every 6 months, which is about 7000 miles.
In both cases, both come out still looking half way new.

Mobil 1 every 5k
I have read a couple post about oil change intervals and most of them say, under normal driving conditions, you could change synthetic oil up to 12k miles!!
People who change it every 3k or even 5k are wasting their money!!
I guess i'm wasting my money but it's ok i like to have peace of mind!!

What's the cheapest place to get amsoil? Are you guys running the 5W-20 XL 7500 mile extended life stuff?

I'm running Amsoil's ASM 0W20 with their Ea filter. I've been mail-ordering my oil since I left PA where a friend of mine was a rep. But when I order, I usually also order their synthetic oils for my boat and yard equipment.

This subject comes up pretty often. Unfortunatly it's a difficult question to asnwer. There's a lot of closely held opinions and traditions, but little real science to tell you what to do.
Ford is fairly conservative in the maint recommendations; as all the makers are. You can use those charts as the minimum. My service manual says 7,500 miles between oil changes, using Motorcraft non-synthetic oil. That's the minimum. You can change it every 1,000 miles if it helps you sleep at night. But you won't get any real benifit.
Sever duty will put more wear on the oil, use up the additive package, and drop the viscosity. When I say severe duty, I mean lap after lap, with oil temps above 220* or so. A few drag strip runs does not constitute severe duty (for oil). Modern oils can easily handle that little bit of stress.
AFAIK, there's only 3 true synthetic oils on the market: Amsoil, Royal Purple, and Redline. Everything else is a blend, or starts with dino oil as a base stock. Even Mobile 1.
The big advantage to a true synthetic is their durability. They can easily surpass factory service intervals in normal use. Under truly severe duty, they can take the heat.
But, the proof is in the pudding, as they say. You can take general recommendations, but you need real science to make an intelligent decision. "My grand dad did it that way" just doesn't cut it. If the factory recommended changing the tires at 25,000 miles, would you do it? Or would you look at the tires, assess wear, and change accordingly? Oil should not be any differant; it's just more difficult to do.
When's that last time you did a UOA? You'de be surprised at how much information you get out of it. Here's mine.
