Yep, cheapest way is to supercharge it...
Since there aren't heads or cams worth a sh#t from the aftermarket people.

Problem is, with a V6, rear ends and primitive manual trannies don't take too kindly the found power.

People do swap v8s into v6s. yeah it's a lot of work. And yes, the entire drivetrain needs to be considered, too (tranny, driveshaft, rear end).
But it can be done.
As far as boring out the 4.0, there's been some articles on it, but it's not really a viable thing to do. The cylinder walls aren't that thick, if I recall, so you can't bore out much at all. By the time you do it all, you haven't gained much. Of course if you build up the internals at the same time, then you could slap a blower on, up the boost, and have plenty of power. Of course, dropping in a V8 would be simpler.

Having a V6 with a blower is a fun alternative. Yeah, you still should or will need to upgrade the rear end and possibly tranny. But much simpler than putting in a v8.

But do what you wish; remember it's YOUR CAR!

Smaller swaybar up front and none at back (except pony).
I think the shocks are the same but I'll have to double check that.
Also, smaller front brakes...

Come on now...
A ranger is much higher and body roll like there's no tomorrow...
A new edge V6 will still handle better.

v6 cars are like auto trannies in mustangs, why in the WORLD would anyone buy one equipped like that. when I was in highschool my dad bought an 89 mustang with a 4 banger, I used to dream of it being a v8 every day
