Default Question about gutting my cats...

Hi everyone! I noticed somewhere that some folks have removed the internals on their catalytic converters and essentially have O/R-ish style exhaust in doing so. I was wondering to anyone that knows or has done this, is it a permanent deal, or can you replace the internals if you ever have to. I figured it would be easiest to buy new ones to replace if ever necessary, but it might be kinda cool to not have the cats restricting me and keeping my exhaust quieter than I want it. And it also saves me from wanting to buy Lt's & Hi-Flow H pipe.

Please feel free to educate me here, and point out why this would be a bad idea, if it indeed would be a bad idea.

And if the only risk is inspection time, then it's not an issue. Our inspections in my county are 12.50 and they just drive it and look at it. There are no computer emissions testing or anything like that

Thanks for your time!

I think it would be easier to just replace it with an OR pipe and then you can always easily switch back to the stock pipe if you need to. I have a Pypes O/R H pipe sitting in my garage with a for sale sign on it that says $100........

It's better to replace it with an O/R H pipe, as David mentioned.

I am also selling my O/R H because I'm installing LTs.
Let me know if you want them.

gutting cats reduce power a little. It has absolutely no benefit. It was proven in import tuner magazine.

Yeah that test sure means a lot to our modular V8 engines.

I would only be doing it to make my Corsa's have a little more volume to their sound. Not trying to actually accomplish any performance enhancements. But thanks for the notice.

Cats are cats. Is our cats more special than others? (Im sure you guys would agree though lol). Any gutted cat is gonna have the same effect.

Gutting your cats is irreversible and increases the exhaust volume in the same way as an offroad setup would. In Texas some inspection places will measure the temperature on your cats to make sure they are the right temperature indicating they are/are not gutted.

It would be better to buy an offroad setup so that you could change back to stock if need be. There are many stock h-pipes for sale with the cats too. Maybe you can pick one up for cheap, gut those cats and have your stockers should the need arise.

This is a video of my cousins exhaust with gutted cats and mac x pipe.

If you gut your cats and the rear O2 sensors are turned on, it WILL throw a code and illuminate the MIL. It will also cause unpredictable changes in your exhaust system resonances that could either help you or hurt you (probably depending on rpm and exhaust gas volume). I would expect that the sound would vary with rpm somewhat more than it does.
